The task was to create two keyboards, one mechanical and the other membrane keyboard. Both are very cost-aware products that would have a part of the same product family.

Process
We explore a wide range of ideas and ended up with a concept direction where we were going against what our competitors were doing. Instead of trying to make the membrane keyboard look like a normal mechanical keyboard the goal of this design direction was to create a bold and eye-catching design in an honest way and embrace the technology it was built on. Having this approach created this very unique product at the same time strengthening the brand values.

Design Overview
In detail, with the design aesthetics, we wanted to create create a keyboard that was less of a sharp box and create a keyboard that had a softer look that is closer match to the gaming mice that always need to have the “soft and ergonomic look”

Big rounded corners. Exposed illuminated mounting plate to show the illuminated membrane technology and really put the RGB in a big focus. In gaming products and in this price segment RGB illumination is always seen as an important feature for a big part of the user segment and even more in the younger part of that segment, we believed it´s important that the users can express themself and have a product that fit´s in the gaming universe.

Top right we have integrated the “hidden until lit” LED multi-media area.

The wrist-wrest and front of the keyboard has a fine stripe texture similar to the Kone Pro mouse to create over branching design elements to keep the product family strong.

The bottom has an extra bold stripe pattern that you can just slightly see on the sides.
Grabbing some extra attention is important for a product like this and doing it on the bottom gives us an opportunity to be extra loud in marketing and in stores but still important not to take too much attention while having it sitting on your desk.
